History and Description of the Russian Blue
The Russian Blue is a natural breed thought to have originated in northern Russia. Originally known as the Archangel Cat or Foreign Blue, much of the breed's early history is not known. It is believed that they were brought by sailors from the Archangel Isles to England and Northern Europe in the 1890s. Rumor also has the Russian Blue as a descendant of the Royal Cat of the Russian Czars and as a favoured pet of Queen Victoria.
World War II nearly ended this breed's existence, like so many other breeds in England, and Siamese had to be used to broaden the gene pool. As a result, it took years of careful breeding to restore the Russian Blue's plush coat.
A Russian Blue is a good choice for the modern home because their undemanding nature fits perfectly into today's busy lifestyle. This breed does not like commotion or boisterous activity. They are a strong, full-bodied cat with no known genetic faults and the coat is a plush 'Double-Coat' with shimmering and silver tipping. Russian kittens are born with blue eyes and the colour changes to a beautiful emerald as they mature. They are generally reserved with strangers, but loyal to their family. The Russian Blue is well suited to an indoor lifestyle but if you have a busy job and are away from home for long periods, it is suggested they have a companion. This does not mean that the companion should be another Russian, which is preferable, but they do get on well with most other breeds.
Each Russian Blue has it's own unique personality and they are an extremely alert cat. They love to play and clown around, but also like to have their own individual space for quality time and affection. Russian Blues can also be quiet and dignified, without the loud meowing known to other breeds.
